Ah, Deborah! You have selected three perfect poems to celebrate this Juneteenth holiday. I really enjoyed reading these again. Thanks so much for this wonderful contribution to the celebration of our newest national holiday!
These poems are exactly what we need in these perilous times--as it appears we may be losing the America we love. As Ben Franklin said in 1787, "A republic if you can keep it."
Ok, I like the poetry but I have deep disconnect with some of the sentiment. Life is not what one wanted or expected for anyone. Hanging onto one’s wants and expectations leads to misery.
I think I hear what you're saying, Jim, but then I remember how much good has come from those pursuing their hopes and aspirations, wanting things to be different, including the founding of this country and the end of slavery, and giving women the right to vote. I'm glad people pursue their ideals and the common good.
I’m not suggesting one abandons working for justice and equality. I just believe one needs to be flexible in what they believe to be justice and equality, always question and allow for growth. Your story about you and your husband was about growth and learning to appreciate life on its own terms. At least, that was the theme I took from it.
I think we're on the same page. We can all strive toward the ideals of equality, inclusion, valuing diversity, but we may have different ideas on what it means and how to accomplish. That's the messiness of life and politics. Keeping an open mind mind about the diversity of ideas is part of being inclusive.
